Kentucky Lake Fishing flimflam -- that this giant, middle American reservoir has some of the best fishing going. There are oodles of anglers’ glory days to be had here. Fish of quality in quantity are available on a lake with tremendous elbowroom (160,000 acres) and opportunity, surrounded by facilities that make the fisherman’s quest easy. Kentucky Lake, more than 60 years old, always has been known as a good black bass lake. However, the good old days bass fishing can’t hold a candle to what’s going on now-a-days. There’s a bass boom under way that could take the fishing quality off the charts. Thanks to a series of exceptional black bass spawns and a resurgence of aquatic vegetation, water weeds, Kentucky Lake is teeming with bass. Swarms of largemouth are in classes of fish that have reached the 15-inch minimum “keeper” size limit and beyond. The number of three to fivepound bass available are abundant, and those even larger aren’t scarce, either. It only promises to get better, for there are untold number of largemouth just under keeper size and growing toward it. These “throw-back” youngsters are reason enough to come fishing on Kentucky Lake. Get occupied in schools of these and some of those 80 to 100 fish days unfold, with I f you care about fishing, Kentucky Lake is almost too good to be true. So, what’s the catch? It depends on how you fish; multiple species await you. But it is true -- no 27 fishermen having too good a time to care that many of their fish aren’t keepers. Legal and larger bass in limit numbers, however, are remarkably routine on Kentucky Lake. Using tournament catches as a measuring stick, competitive anglers don’t make many waves at the weigh-ins most of the year unless they are filling limits with bass averaging four pounds or more per fish. Most observers expect increasing numbers of heavyweight fish over the next few seasons as jumbo spawn classes age, but already catches averaging better than five pounds per fish are seen. Along with Kentucky Lake’s boomer largemouth population, it boasts a lesser but exceptional segment of smallmouth bass. Some open water, usually deeper fishing patterns that focus on these bronze beauties can produce all-smallmouth catches that include what would be fish of a lifetime elsewhere. It’s not just everywhere that one can mix largemouth and smallmouth in, say, the five-pound class on consecutive casts -- but you can here. Kentucky Lake has a wonderfully long season and the advantage of multiple methods for catching bass. It’s do-able year round, but most concentrate from March through November. Early and late in the season, more bass are caught deeper along main lake structures like points. During the spring warm-up, fishing prospers shallower and shallower as largemouth gradually migrate into major creeks and eventually into the backs of bays and pockets for spawning. There’s a period in April and May when typically much of the fishing takes place around shallow shores as higher water envelopes bushes and other vegetation. Many bass anglers concentrate on deeper, offshore structures -- drop-offs, underwater points and humps -- from late spring through summer as many of the bass take 28 up positions in schools there. While many prefer these open water spots during the warm months, there are always others who find plenty of action working much shallower water around banks, points or back in coves. There are enough bass that alternatives work. Come the cooling weather of autumn and the bass fishing grows more shallow and scattered. From then until the onset of wintry weather slows the bass bite, a whole arsenal of tactics and lures might pay off on any one day. You’d be mistaken, however, if you put all your eggs into the bass basket. Bass may be the headliners on Kentucky Lake nowadays, but there’s so much more. Kentucky Lake for good reason has had a better reputation as a crappie fishing hole. The reservoir built its reputation on slab-sized what crappie for decades. The lake is a changed world since then, and today’s crappie fishing isn’t what it was -- but that’s not to say it’s weak. Kentucky Lake still is at the upper tier of crappie waters, but the environment is different. The old lake continues to produce some of the biggest, skillet-filling white crappie, but they are a minority nowadays. The waters have grown clearer and the bottom increasingly rocky throughout the years, and black crappie have responded by becoming the dominant species. Fishermen who have adapted to black crappie ways -- fishing more by casting and long-line trolling and concentrating more on shallower, shoreline sorts of water -- are discovering some good new days that rival the good old ones. Crappie fishing can still be hot, and black crappie produce their own rich ranks of thick fish of two pounds and heavier. Anglers increasingly have discovered that bluegill and redear sunfish constitute one of Kentucky Lake’s greatest fishing resources. These sunfish species once were relegated to kid stuff, until changing lake conditions pumped up their sizes to capture adult attention. Nowadays, bluegill of greater than hand size are caught by the sackful, and redears pose a big-game twist of sunfish opportunities. These “shell crackers” grow to Weakley’s Guide Service • Largemouth • Smallmouth • Crappie • Bluegill • White Bass • Sauger • Rockfish Call now for your Kentucky Lake fishing experience. There may be no better option on Kentucky Lake for producing fast action and about as many fish as one wants to catch than bait fishing with ultra light gear around a bluegill or redear spawning bed in late spring. It’s great for veteran and firsttime fishermen alike. The hot weather staple for Kentucky Lake visitors and locals alike, however, would have to be white bass, or “stripes” to the natives. These line-sided predators prowl the open waters of the main lake ambushing schools of shad minnows -- and anglers who get lures before them incur stretched lines and loaded rods. Hard-hitting action makes white bass a favorite of everyone who fishes for them, and the peak of the stripe bite in midsummer is refreshing during a time when many other forms of fishing suffer a bit of decline in the heat. With all this game and panfish action out there, another set of anglers hardly gets motivated for anything that lacks whiskers. And Kentucky Lake has it in spades with its bulging population of catfish -- blues, channels and flatheads. Underfished if anything, the lake’s catfish riches probably offer the best chances to add ridiculous poundage to your catch and to tussle with something longer than your leg. Blue catfish in double-figure weights are pretty hum-drum and the adults among the species aren’t rare in economy sizes -30 pounds on up and out of sight. It’s probably your best chance at a 60- or 70pound inland catch. Channel catfish are more common in single-digit weights, but a boat load can be freezer fodder for multiple fish fries to come. The species is caught throughout most of the year, often a common catch in the lake’s bays. Flathead catfish, less common, still offer a gollywhopper potential for the whisker fish angler. Like the blues, they can grow to relative giant size. Sure, there are plenty of things to do up on shore, but with the quality fishing that Kentucky Lake holds in its range of favored species, it would be a shame to waste too much time off the water. 30 Guide Services Moors Resort & Marina Gilbertsville, KY 42044 270-554-0104 • 270-559-1366 www.bigkahunafishingguideservice.com Come spend a great day of fishing with us on these beautiful lakes. A headliner for many hunters is the white-tailed deer, and the Kentucky Lake area grows plenty and whoppers of the species. The state of Kentucky in general is among the leaders nationally in producing record book quality bucks. Kentucky’s long-running archery season, crossbow hunting, muzzleloader and modern rifle seasons provide ample opportunities to search out that wallhanger and the freezer-filling venison the deer hunter seeks. Kentucky wildlife managers encourage hunters to take more whitetails to help hold the burgeoning population in check, so come on and lend a hand. Public land is often critical to opportunity, and the big lake area has oodles of it. Chief among these is the U.S. Forest Service-managed Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. The LBL is a topic all itself, an enormous wooded peninsula sandwiched between Kentucky Lake and the sister waters of Lake Barkley. 32 T ake a walk on the wild side of the Kentucky Lake area for some memorymaking hunting adventures. The woodlands, waters, fields and sloughs of the region keep pulling back sportsmen every season for pursuits of game large and small, furred and The LBL is 170,000 acres of ridges and hollows, more than 90 percent of it forested in oak- and hickory-dominated hardwoods. The big woods area long has been a favorite for visiting deer hunters who take advantage of tremendous elbowroom, bonus deer permits, quota gun hunts and freewheeling archery hunting opportunities. Another kind of habitat, if anything, more rich in game, is found in the Clark’s River National Wildlife Refuge that centers around the bottomland hardwood corridor of Clark’s River both upstream and downstream from its headquarters at Benton. Presently regulated in conjunction with statewide seasons, Clark’s River NWR offers thousands of acres where enterprising hunters can probe the bottomlands for boomer bucks in deer season. Turkeys rival deer when it comes to stirring hunter passions, and the Kentucky Lake area is packed with the big birds. The rites of spring mean turkey gobbler hunting hereabouts, and it mobilizes a camouflage-clad legion in pursuit of old Tom. The LBL hosts quota turkey hunting as well as non-quota, open hunting opportunities each spring gobbler season. Clark’s River NWR also hosts a great deal of turkey hunting under statewide season regulation. Waterfowling is another driving force for sportsmen. Kentucky Lake itself can be a chilly season hotbed of waterfowl action when Mississippi Flyway migrators spin off for some big water rest stops. The big reservoir attracts a mixture of puddle ducks and some divers, and a smattering of Canadian geese add some extra big bird zest to the action. Free lance hunting from boat and shoreline blinds can be rewarding throughout the season. Kentucky Lake hunting can get a jolt of added duck movement during serious winter cold when bottomland waters freeze over and birds seek out the open water of the reservoir.
