Land Between the
Lakes
(LBL to us local folks), is a 170,000-acre national
recreation area in Western Kentucky and Tennessee. LBL is a
unique inland peninsula formed between Kentucky Lake and Lake
Barkley. More than 200 miles of scenic trails and abandoned
logging roads meander through LBL's backwoods, fields and
alongside peaceful lakeshores. Catch a glimpse of native
wildlife. Walk in the footsteps of General Grant. Sleep under
the stars. . .
Did someone
mention Off Road Vehicles?
Just visit LBL to for days of fun. Ride over steep hills, through forests and
along the lakeshore at Turkey Bay Off Highway Vehicle Area.
It's 2,500 acres of trails and open riding, all bordering
Kentucky Lake. Want to spend the night? Turkey Bay is also a
camping area, so pitch your tent and spend some time.
Mountain Bikes
will enjoy this touring Land Between the Lakes on the
Canal Loop and Jenny Ridge trails.
The only portion of the North/South
Hiking Trail open to mountain biking is the Jenny Ridge
Mountain Bike Trail. This route covers a variety of terrain.
Paved roads and a dirt trail with stream crossings are ideal
for beginners. More advanced bikers will enjoy the dirt and
leaf trails that lead to scenic lake vistas further along the
trail.
Cycling......Numerous
paved roads meandering through LBL. Start at The Trace and
explore! Winding roads travel across rolling hillsides and
alongside meadows; many lead into quiet lakefront bays. When
you visit LBL, be sure to pick up a road map at any Welcome
Station!
The North South
trail spans the entire length of LBL and ranges from rugged,
hilly terrain in the north to more smooth hiking in the south.
Portions are accessible from The Trace for those wishing to
hike a section of the trail. The entire trail is about 65
miles and rates from moderate to strenuous with a 200-foot
elevation change.
The Canal Loop Trail,
in the north end of LBL, is a series of connecting trails
provides walks ranging from 1.5 miles to 14 miles. One of our
most popular trails, because it offers spectacular lake views
and the opportunity for short walks ranging from easy to
moderate and have an 80-foot elevation change.
Honker Trail
is located near the Nature Station in the heart of the
Environmental Education Area. This trail winds
around Honker Lake through a variety of habitats: dense
forest, meadows, and along the lakeshore. Be sure to watch for
the resident flock of Giant Canada Geese which nest in the
area and give the trail its name!
How about a horseback
adventure from LBL's Wranglers Campground!
Over 70 miles of horse and wagon trails plus an extensive
network of old roads lead to some of the most scenic spots at
LBL. Want to spend the night? At trail's end awaits Wranglers
Campground, the Southeast's premier horse camp. Stalls,
hitching posts, hot showers and more make it a comfortable
night for both horse and rider!
And, that was only a beginning
description of the many trails and backroads in this beautiful
area. Don't forget to visit The Homeplace,
the Golden Pond Planetarium, the Elk
and Bison Prairie and the Nature Station
in LBL. Just a stroll or drive through the area will lead you
to discover the lakes area is home to more than 54 different
kinds of mammals and 230 species of birds. LBL has been
involved in several projects to restore our native wildlife --
many of them endangered species -- such as American bison,
bald eagles, osprey, elk, red wolves, and river otters. LBL's
back woods, trails and shorelines offer some great
opportunities to see native wildlife in its natural habitat.
Wildlife viewing trips by van, boat, canoe, bike or on foot
are available in Land Between the Lakes.
Whether you enjoy hiking,
biking, canoeing, historical sites, horseback riding, wildlife
viewing, ORV or just exploring, Kentucky Lake offers an
abundance of eco-tourism, all surrounded by one of the world's
largest man-made lakes!
